Troika by jflaxman Troika by jflaxman
These rugged motor trikes see widespread use throughout the Wastelands due to their simplicity, long range and low fuel consumption. They are easily adapted for combat, which makes them popular with insurgents and raiders as well as Alliance clans. Most carry heavy infantry weapons, giving their users the option of trading stealth for high mobility. These vehicles lack the armour needed for extended firefights, but are useful for reconnaissance, skirmishing and light support.

Design Features

- The simple two cylinder engine is easily accessible and can run on a variety of cheaply distilled biofuels. An excellent power-to-weight ratio allows fast acceleration and good cross country performance, while two powered rear wheels aid traction and stability.

- Two armoured fuel tanks (one front, one rear) extend range at a much lower running cost than heavier wheeled vehicles.

- The Troika’s small size makes it easy to hide, manhandle over obstacles, or recover if disabled.

- A high-backed seat doubles as a weapon mount and can be fitted with a harness to improve driver safety.

- The flatbed either carries cargo or serves as a platform for a forward- or rear-firing weapon. Here the gunner stands or kneels, though variants have a second seat and/or revolving turret ring.

- Standard armament consists of a .50 hopper-fed machine gun. Other popular weapons include high-powered anti-materiel rifles, rocket and grenade launchers. Troikas are also occasionally used to tow light artillery.

- Some Troika crews wear body armour, but most rely primarily on speed to evade or outflank opposition.

Wow, nice. Think the crew is a bit exposed to incoming fire, but still great. Definitely i would ride on this one listening Mötorhead. Cheers!

I've got the old file in a folder called "Archives" on my computer along with others I've reworked. With its lower profile and differently sized front and rear tyres this design owes more to existing motor trikes.

Out of all the details on this thing, why did I have to go an notice the eagle head on the knife pommel?

I guess the eagle's been a popular motif for armies since Roman times, a tradition adopted by many cultures including the USA.

I imagine hardcore survivalists in a post apocalyptic world might choose rats or cockroaches as unlikely but appropriate symbols. I might work this into a later piece.

Now that's interesting idea.

Use the more base creatures for the survivalists and and the more elegant creature for the military.

Wow man. I love how well you think through these things. It's like you don't skip a single detail.
Love the picture too, great poses and uniforms, the gun looks TIGHT. I really like the background as well. It remains interesting but doesn't take away from the focus of the piece.
Great work, JF.

The original troikas were Russian carriages or sleds pulled by three horses. This vehicle/gun combination owes a bit to both ideas!

I would imagine that the .50 would be pretty disorienting for the driver.
That said, where do I throw my money to get one?

You'd want to wear good ear protection. There are lots of motor trikes on the market, but armed mods might be hard to find.

Sorry, I was mostly joking.
Although, now I'm seriously considering welding one together for myself. It would certainly get a few questioning looks from rednecks at the rifle range. Personally, I'd rather have something to attach a rifle to, similar to how I have my bipods on my Remington 700s. Except, instead of a bipod, it would be a motor vehicle. I think it would be amusing, but I'd estimate a project cost of a few thousand dollars more than I'd prefer to spend.

You could probably make a single joint swivel mount and weld the bottom to the vehicle, but I'm not sure how the legal system would take to that...

I doubt there's anything in the legal code around here to prevent me from it. Making it illegal to do that would be like banning barrel shrouds. Then again...
"Oh, it's preventing the shooter from experiencing physical pain and hearing loss? MUST BAN." -The guys who made sound suppressors illegal.

Yea, but if you look at it from their side, they think it's doing more harm than good. "Well, hey, if we can't see or hear them there terrorist and gang members, how are we supposed to find them?" But, again, from their side. You would be the only gun on the block with a vehicle-mounted LEGAL weapon.

That cranial malfunction resulting in a typo in the end sentence made me laugh, for obvious reasons. That is, assuming you aren't referring to me as a gun.

Sound suppressors are illegal only because of the old misnomer they were once known by - Silencers. There was such a massive misconception that a "Silencer" made a gun super quiet, while in reality, this is extremely false, because no, sticking a sound suppressor on an AR-15 doesn't mean you can shoot someone in one room and have nobody in the house hear it.

Well, all typos aside, the legality of suppressors needs to be changed, or at least a bit more lenient. (And don't even get me started on New Jersey's gun laws, ick)

It's good to know you're interested in Sauron and his 300. hahaha.

Its sort of like the battle for thermopylae. Sauron and 300 warriors (dark humans or orcs) against a lot of eldar.

Hopefully in Fallout 4.
