Does anyone give much thought to the Sonic franchise nowadays? Was a vapid little git who could run fast ever going to inspire complex and rewarding gameplay, strong plots or decent characters? Was Dr. Robotnik/Eggman the least menacing villain ever conceived? Could the series have done with more females who weren’t cross-species love interests? Well don’t despair – this ancient wreck has been given fresh paint and jump-started! In its latest incarnation the brilliant and beautiful Eva Robotnik seeks to purge the world of dog-cat-sharks pretending to be hedgehogs. Her proportions are a little skewed, but small blue bears don’t have to fret as she isn’t clothed too skimpily. Her adversary Sironic the Hipstog has gotten so uncool he’s now a cool postmodern trendsetter. What does he have to fear from science in an age of cultural relativism? Eva’s assumptions are based on the work of a predominantly white male elite and limit her appreciation of alternate points of view. The fact so many cultures used scientific principles when boatbuilding and blacksmithing, hunting game and harvesting – whether they called this “science” or not – is completely lost on him, as is the high likelihood these scientific principles will work in anybody’s hands. And what a big gun Eva has! Will this saga end with a bang or an apologetic whimper?
