“When our leader, Kyosti, married Ulyana, our elders warned of dire portents, but he dismissed them with a laugh and said we choose our destinies. We were naturally elated when she said she would bear him a child; to our dismay, that child, a daughter, was born with different coloured eyes, a sign of ancient evils that had almost destroyed humankind. Kyosti blamed his wife, divorced her, and married Hannele instead. Only I was brave enough to vainly plead for leniency when Ulyana and her baby were abandoned to the winter snows.

Years passed, and Hannele bore Kyosti several healthy children, including two sons who grew up to be proud warriors. Their service would be needed, as other clans told wild tales of Mutes fighting like human beings, exhibiting an unusual cunning and using ancient weaponry as good as any we had found.

The Stormcallers and Nightwolves fell, and their corpses were left to the crows. Our turn came one bitter night after a hard march through rough terrain. Our lookouts died without a sound – and then the Mutes were everywhere, spraying our shelters with gunfire and silencing the wounded with knives. I saw Kyosti and his family killed, and expected worse when I was seized – but dawn brought a revelation. The Mutes were taking orders from a girl with different coloured eyes. Just before she let me go, she said we choose our destinies…"

I really love the look of the Mutes. Great design on them, man.
I enjoy the way you draw guns as well, they look especially nice from a lot of other people's designs.
And you gave it a wicked background to boot.
Very nice work, as always.
