The Dantean notion of contrapasso is perhaps best embodied in Bertran de Born, a medieval troubadour condemned to the eighth circle of Hell. The latest advances in cybernetics have made such wild imaginings a frightening reality. This rebel leader has been beheaded, but endures as a testament to his new masters’ technological prowess; his formerly contentious speeches have given way to public announcements interspersed with propaganda.

Cool, love the stark clean forms. Cyber Hell is such a fun setting, it's always great to see.

Coming from you this is high praise indeed! This guy doesn't appear in a literal hell but a dystopian futureworld whose inhabitants will be revealed in a medieval-style bestiary. I find the fusion of technology and superstition both frightening and fascinating. The detailed subjects on plain parchment backgrounds are a tribute to the style you've mastered.

I've admired this piece for a long time, primarily for its fascinating design and masterful execution (it shows a major improvement in your human-anatomical skills since I first started following your work, plus the overall detailing and coloring is superb). On top of this, the concept of old-meets-new with religious zealotry and advanced cybernetics spawning an entirely more bizarre and more terrible array of occult practices is always a joy to ponder.

Thanks! I find the idea of technology being used to further barbarism both disturbing and intriguing. We've seen it in our own world, but I've taken the concept further, as with my earlier "Iron Martyr" piece. I personally think both it and "Schismatic" transcend genre illustration and make a valid social commentary.

I haven't spent as much time on the "Necromechanics" series as I should, but I've got some recent concept sketches that will lead to greater things.
