Cyclopia is a rare birth defect that occurs when the brain fails to properly divide into two hemispheres. This also results in one optical nerve and one eye in a central socket, though occasionally those afflicted are born with two fused eyes instead. The nose is either absent or manifests as a boneless proboscis above the eye socket. In some cases the mouth is absent and the ears are closely placed beneath the single eye as well.
This condition is always fatal; babies are usually stillborn or die soon after delivery. Like other severe genetic disorders, it poses some interesting questions to those who claim all human suffering stems from our misuse of free will, or who attest to the existence of an all-knowing, all-powerful and entirely benevolent god. I need not state my own beliefs. This image alone should be enough.
