Harpy

Description

A Harpy closes with a target on the edge of Crater Bay. These versatile helicopters have been used for generations and remain a major asset to contemporary militia groups.

Design Features:

- The Harpy’s success stems less from high-tech innovation than simple functionality. As it was widely manufactured spare parts are still available and it is more easily maintained than many other rotorcraft.

- The main rotor provides lift and thrust. Four slightly shortened blades are used, allowing the Harpy to operate in more confined environments. The tail rotor counters torque and provides directional control. It is raised for better ground clearance and spars beneath the tail boom further reduce the chance of strikes.

- The engines are mounted above the hull to increase internal space. This also gives them more protection against ground debris and enemy fire. Harpies were designed to fly on one engine if the other failed, though more casual attitudes to servicing and takeoff weight have caused some needless crashes since.

- The large cab is an asset on long flights; crew can easily communicate, share tasks or change positions. The windshield and viewing ports can withstand small arms fire but are larger and more vulnerable than those on dedicated gunships.

- The cargo bay can hold up to ten passengers or one ton of equipment, though more can be carried externally. Harpies lightened for patrol can pick up stranded travellers, casualties or prisoners. Others act as medium transports, bringing reinforcements and supplies to combat or disaster zones.

- The sturdy wheeled undercarriage can take a harder landing than skids and lets ground crew or vehicles move Harpies more easily. Brakes can be applied in crosswinds, on ship decks or uneven ground.

- Harpies have no standard armament but can carry light weapons externally. Fixed nose guns are used for strafing; door guns have wider fire arcs and are better for suppression; and rockets can destroy hard targets, devastate wide areas or deliver special payloads such as smoke or incendiaries. Where true gunships are available, Harpies will normally withdraw if an enemy is seen.
