Dystopia by jflaxman Dystopia by jflaxman
Beyond each dark and brooding spire
Each tangled web of razor wire
Each weeping pipe, each leprous wall
Each filthy lane and reeking hall
Beyond the stars we rarely see
There lies a new reality.

Beyond each mocking city street
Each weary mile on aching feet
Each hour of hunger, pain and fear
Each burning stare and blinding tear
Beyond these tracts of misery
Our hearts are pure, our minds are free.

Beyond each promise laced with guile
Each harlot's laugh, each hangman's smile
Each outstretched hand, each hidden knife
Each lonely death and wasted life
Lies honour, mercy, hope and grace
We may yet find a better place.

A beautiful piece and a beautiful poem to go with it.

Great work, very believably drawn, and I love the simple but super effective forms of detail.

Nice. The poem's very well done too, even if I can't concede with its message. I like how they go together... mixed-media synergy is always extra impressive.

I wasn't watching the clock, but there's about 24 hours of work here. It started as a rough sketch I did at night in an empty food court and more tone and detail was added over the next three days.

Some of the old masters spent years on individual paintings, and this is just a humble attempt to recapture some of their dedication, which is largely dismissed in an age of blank canvasses and concept art. The attitudes I've encountered in the contemporary art world have done a lot to contribute to the alienation and misery expressed in this piece and accompanying poem.

I have literally seen those blank canvasses. Well, almost blank, completely sprayed over.

Wow. Even more awesome then!

Not many people put that much work into art pieces any more, unless they're going to get paid for it. People in general just can not wait any more.

Alienation and misery? I hear that. :-(
